C'est en été, sous le soleil ardent d'un petit port de pêche d'Andalousie, qu'Esty voit le jour. Est-ce cette chaleur, le feu de cet astre, qu'elle met œuvre dans ses créations, dont elle se sert pour accomplir la transmutation alchimique de la nature brute en bijoux d'or et d'argent ?
Ou bien est-ce l'eau de cette Méditerranée, qui la fascine tant? " La mer est mon refuge, j'y puise mon énergie, la sérénité et l'essentiel de mon inspiration, les êtres marins ont une grâce sans égale, j'aurai voulu être une créature aquatique". cette obsession, avoue-t-elle avec une candeur désarmante, hante ses rêves de manières les plus insolites.
Entre l'eau et le métal, elle fait des parallèles déconcertant pour le profane " Ils ont la même fluidité, se comportent et se travaillent de façon identique, on les forme et les déforme à l'infini sans qu'une seule molécule se perde, Ils sont sans limites, je vis et me déplace à travers eux avec la même aisance ".
Née dans une famille cosmopolite, père andalou, mère francophone originaire d'égypte, elle se présente avant tout comme Sépharade et porte en elle toute la tradition nomade et le génie orfèvre de ce peuple qui rayonna durant toute la période arabo-andalouse du sud espagnol.
Des circonstances familiales complexes la conduiront très tôt à voyager beaucoup. À l'age de 2 ans, elle quitte la chaleur de l'Espagne pour le grand désert blanc du Canada, à l'espagnol de ses premiers mots se substituent alors le français à l'école et l'anglais à la maison, elle parle toujours ces trois langues avec aisance en plus de l'Italien appris lors d'un long séjour de découverte en Italie.
Enfant elle a l'opportunité de connaître différentes cultures, l'héritage français du Québec et les traditions indiennes du Canada se fondent et s'allient dans le creuset culturel d'Esty comme autant de métaux en fusion avec lesquels elle crée aujourd'hui.
Débordante d'énergie et de joie de vivre, elle pratiquera le ballet, la gymnastique artistique et le trapèze plusieurs heures par jour. De ces activités, elle conserve le sens de la discipline, la concentration et la grâce du mouvement.
Son intérêt pour la création remonte aussi loin qu'elle se souvienne, les éléments mobiles la fascinent, il faut qu'elle assemble, transforme… ces mêmes éléments, on les retrouve aujourd'hui dans le travail d'Esty, ces pièces tournent, s'emboîtent, se démontent.
En 1989, elle entreprend une carrière sans équivoque à l'école de Joaillerie et de Métaux d'Art de Montréal. Puis, à la recherche d'une approche diamétralement opposée s'inscrit à 'l'Escola Massana' de Barcelone où, de 91 à 93, elle étudie le design et la création du bijou contemporain, sous la direction du maître Ramon Puig Cuyas qui l'encourage à aller au-delà de ses limites.
Ses études en Espagne terminées, elle s'installe à Paris et tout de suite son travail suscite l'intérêt des professionnels de la mode et de la haute couture.
Dès 94 on trouve ses créations dans la boutique du joaillier Jean Din Vahn, Place Vendôme, puis elle réalise une série de six prototypes en argent pour Thierry Mugler Parfums et créé une collection de vêtements et accessoires en métal pour un défilé du couturier Philippe de Saint Mart-Guillet, qui a lieu au Sénat.
Lauréate en octobre 94 du Prix du Jeune Créateur décerné par la ville de Cagnes-sur-Mer, laquelle met à sa disposition pour 3 ans un atelier galerie ; elle part pour le Sud.
Son œuvre fait aujourd'hui partie de la collection permanente du Château-Musée Grimaldi.
Séduite par la lumière, l'histoire, le soleil, la mer, elle s'y sent chez elle. En 1997, elle décide de s'y établir et créé son propre atelier-boutique dans un ancien pressoir à vin niché au détour d'une ruelle de la cité médiévale. Espace organique qu'elle fait évoluer au gré de son travail.
Le souffle de vie qu'elle donne à ses créations traduit toute la sensibilité du regard, la joie de l'instant. Elle fait la synthèse du soleil et du métal, allie la mécanique à l'organique, le ludique au ressentit.
Fin 2003, Esty signe un contrat de trois ans avec la société Birks-Mayors.
Cette maison prestigieuse, qui célèbre cette année son 125e anniversaire, possède près de 70 magasins de joaillerie au Canada et sur la côte sud-est des Etats-unis.
Elle concède à Birks-Mayors le droit d'exploitation de la marque commerciale "Esty" en Amérique du Nord ainsi que la propriété intellectuelle sur les collections qu'elle développe pour eux. Birks-Mayors se charge de la fabrication, la promotion, la commercialisation, la distribution et la vente des collections "Esty" à travers toute sa chaîne de magasins.
Depuis 1994, Esty expose non seulement en France mais dans plusieurs pays européens, ainsi qu'aux Etats-Unis et au Canada.
Born under the blazing Andalusian sun, Esty Grossman is a contemporary artist who puts that fire into her every work. While growing up in the chilly Canadian metropolis of Montreal, her Mediterranean spirit and energy where chanelled into ballet, gymnastics and acrobatic trapeze. Esty began her career in the art of jewelry making at the Ecole de Joaillerie et de Métaux d'art de Montréal in 1989 where she was finally able to quench her thirst for metalsmithing. Her passionate interest in this form of expression led her to explore further with a series of internships and intensive workshops throughout Canada. It was at the Escola Massana in Barcelona that she was encouraged and challenged to fulfil her desire to create contemporary jewelry. During her three-year program at this renowned international design school she also learned the essentials of stone setting and metal alloying by working for a gemmologist to finance her studies. In the fall of 1993 she moved to Paris where she worked for a year in Haute Couture creating prototypes, bodices and accessories for Fashion Designers including Thierry Mugler Parfum and Philippe de Saint Mart Guilet.
In October 1994 Esty was awarded theYoung Designer for Contemporary Jewelry prize by the town of Cagnes-sur-Mer on the French Riviera, which has become her home. Her gallery/workshop in the medieval village of the Haut-de-Cagnes is where she works and plays year round.
Fascinated by patterns in nature, Esty studies organic movement and interprets it through her work. Her microsculpture, a vision of nature, is inspired by ocean floors, marine life, seeds and dried flowers.
"Discovering the living organisms that can be found in water is a major source of inspiration. Water and metal have the same fluidity and I move through both with the same ease. There are no boundaries, no limits."
